May 2007 Progress Report on use of Bio-diesel Fuel Now at B-85 ASTM 6751
After 6 months of incremental increases
ARE-Energy Power Plant at the Cycle Systems Lynchburg, VA. Shredder Complex is now using B-85 ASTM 6751 fuel. The change from B-75 to B-85 is yielding continuous positive results.
Monthly oil samples using the bio-diesel have shown no variances in the engine condition. In addition in co-operation with the power assembly re-manufacture the fuel injectors were checked with no reported operating discrepancies.
During a period in March, when the ambient temperature dropped below 17 degrees, the fuel started to jell in the tank. The percentage of No. 2 Diesel was increased. This obstacle led to the research of utilizing the exhaust heat, creating a CHP operation, to keep the bio-diesel at the correct operating temperature. Work is now underway to refine this alternative.
There has been a definite reduction of particular emissions. The dark puffs of smoke associated with surge loads of the diesel engine have almost been totally eliminated. Periodic air emission testing is on-going. Another air emission testing with the utilization on B-85 is scheduled for August.
